1. Detailed survey of various organic waste generating sources in Surat city like Hotels, Vegetable Markets, Gardens, Community Halls, Social & commercial locations. It encompasses zone-wise assessment of exact quantity & nature of segregated waste, study of source-segregation process, collection & transportation mode and proposing a Techno Commercially viable Treatment Process like Bio-CNG/Electricity generation from the Organic Waste.

2. Survey of various organic waste generating sources in Deolali Cantonment Board area, Nashik – Detailed Study of the area to locate Hotels, Cook houses, Canteens, Restaurants, Vegetable Markets, Gardens, Animal / Chicken / Fish Market / Cattle yards, Community Halls, Social & commercial places, etc. Carried out Site-visits, observation, inspection, analysis, Inference and DPR Preparation to assess the feasibility of setting up Organic Waste Processing Project based on Bio-methanation technique so as to produce Compost, Biogas or Electricity and to supply the end product for utilization in surrounding residential areas.

Solid Waste Management

Solid waste management is one among the basic essential services provided by municipal authorities in the country to keep urban centres clean. However, it is among the most poorly rendered services in the basket—the systems applied are unscientific, outdated and inefficient; population coverage is low; and the poor are marginalized. Waste is littered all over leading to insanitary living conditions. Municipal laws governing the urban local bodies do not have adequate provisions to deal effectively with the evergrowing problem of solid waste management. With rapid urbanization, the situation is becoming critical. The urban population has grown fivefold in the last six decades with 285.35 million people living in urban areas as per the 2001 Census

Water and Wastewater treatment

Waste water in the Nantes metropolitan area (575,000 h) is treated in twelve purifi cation plants, with capacities that vary from 1,200 inhabitant equivalent (Vertou – Pégers Reigners) to 600,000 inhabitant equivalent (Vallée de Tougas - Nord Loire). Together, they have a total capacity of 780,000 inhabitant equivalent, which will increase to 840,000 population equivalent when the updated biological treatment process at the Petite Californie (Sud Loire) purifi cation plant comes into service (at the end of 2010). This capacity means that expansion of the metropolitan area presents no fears and industrial waste-water discharges containing biodegradable effl uent can be treated (102 agreements signed in 2009, 477 authorisations, 2,094 fi les opened). There is systematic and regular monitoring of industrial discharges. In addition, waste water from villages far removed from the transfer networks is treated by nine semi-public treatment plants.

Vermi-composting

Vermicompostingis the process by which worms are used to convert organic materials (usually wastes) into a humus-like material known as vermicompost. The goal is to process the material as quickly and efficiently as possible.

  • Vermicompost appears to be generally superior to conventionally produced compost in a number of important ways;
  • Vermicompost is superior to most composts as an inoculant in the production of compost teas
  • Worms have a number of other possible uses on farms, including value as a high-quality animal feed
  • Vermicomposting and vermiculture offer potential to organic farmers as sources of supplemental income.

Anaerobic digestion with Bio-Gas generation

There is a great deal of environmental pressure in many parts of the world to ascertain how livestock waste can best be handled. Livestock manure, like cow dung in the absence of appropriate disposal methods can cause adverse environmental and health problems such as: pathogen contamination, odour, air borne ammonia, green house gases.

  • [1]. Anaerobic digestion has been considered as waste-to-energy technology, and is widely used in the treatment of different organic wastes, for example: organic fraction of municipal solid waste, sewage sludge, food waste, animal manure.
  • [2]. Anaerobic treatment comprises of decomposition of organic material in the absence of free oxygen and production of methane, carbon dioxide, ammonia and traces of other gases and organic acids of low molecular weight
  • [3]. Recently, large volume of cow dung generated from feedlot farming increases annually, most of which are disposed into landfills or are applied to the land without treatment. Anaerobic digestion provides an alternative option for energy recovery and waste treatment. In this paper, cow dung was assessed for the use of anaerobic digestion with the objectives of treating the dung waste to decrease disposal costs and to generate biogas. The biogas produced contains mainly methane and carbon dioxide, and can be used as a source of renewable energy. The aim of this paper was to investigate the effectiveness and the performance characteristics of anaerobic digestion of cow dung for biogas production in batch and semi-continuous operation

Electricity is generated on a large scale using different methods, including water. Most high-performance generating stations create electricity by converting the energy of movement, or mechanical energy, into electrical energy.

Solar energy thermal and Electric lighting devices

Solar Thermal Technology Systems Solar thermal systems include those that are based on low temperature thermal collectors . These systems use heat from the sun for the final heat consumption. This technology system consists of two groups of flat solar collectors and a low concentration solar collector (concentrator collectors). Thermal systems have a storage unit to provide heating at Most solar thermal systems are used for heating water in commercial buildings, swimming pools, water, large homes , apartment buildings and hotels Also a large part of the demand is for space heating cooling of buildings and supplying power for a bsorption heat pumps2 with solar thermal technologies. Some of the basic con cepts of thermal systems are as follows:

  • Working fluid is used to transfer the absorbed heat for suitable usage a heat transfer fluid such as oil, water or air is needed
  • Absorbent surfaces : dark surfaces made from different technologies to maximize the absorption of thermal energy. In solar power plant s, absorbent surfaces are exposed where the sun is shine or is concentrated.
  • Thermal storage system : stores solar energy to use at night or on a cloudy day. In solar water heaters, hot water storage tanks are used and in power system s , thermal energy is stored in reservoirs containing oil and sand.
